YOUNG HARRIS, GA — A 75-year-old Young Harris resident, Laneau Hayes, was arrested on January 6, 2025, following an investigation by the Towns County Sheriff’s Office into a cruelty to animals complaint on Old Chicken Farm Road. Hayes now faces misdemeanor charges after authorities discovered several cats living in what officials described as deplorable conditions.

The investigation began when deputies responded to reports of neglected animals at the property. Upon arrival, they found multiple cats covered in feces with severely matted fur, indicating prolonged neglect. The animals were promptly removed from the premises and turned over to The Whiskers Project and The Mountain Shelter Humane Society for care and rehabilitation.

Sheriff’s Office officials have not released additional details about the number of cats involved or the specific circumstances leading to the complaint, but the case underscores ongoing efforts to address animal welfare concerns in the community.

Hayes was taken into custody and charged with misdemeanor cruelty to animals. As is standard in legal proceedings, authorities emphasize that all subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The investigation remains ongoing, and further updates may be provided as the case progresses.

Local animal welfare organizations, including The Whiskers Project and The Mountain Shelter Humane Society, are now working to ensure the cats receive the medical attention and support they need to recover from their ordeal.
