The Hayesville Yellow Jackets faced a daunting challenge in the opening round of the annual Battle of the States Tournament, taking on the 10-2 Rabun County Wildcats. The game, held Friday, Dec. 27, at Towns County High School, showcased the Wildcats' skill and depth as they defeated the Yellow Jackets 81-36.
Hayesville entered the contest with a 2-4 record, hoping to make a statement against a formidable Rabun team. However, the Wildcats seized control early, jumping out to a 17-6 lead after the first quarter. Rabun County’s dominance continued into the second quarter, extending their lead to 42-13 by halftime.
The Yellow Jackets showed resilience in the third quarter, putting up a stronger offensive performance and scoring 17 points. Despite their efforts, Rabun’s relentless pace widened the margin to 57-30 by the end of the period. The Wildcats closed out the game with a commanding 81-36 victory.
Hayesville’s top scorers included Slade Crouch and Jackson Sellers, who each contributed 10 points, while Brendon Lynch added 4 points to the Yellow Jackets’ total.
The loss places Hayesville in the tournament's losers bracket, where they will face Coosa High School at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28. The Yellow Jackets will look to regroup and compete with determination as they aim to advance in the tournament.
