On Thursday, Sept. 5, Hayesville Middle and High Schools hosted Hiwassee Dam for a non-conference showdown. Both Lady Yellow Jacket teams had already defeated the Lady Eagles earlier in the season and were looking to complete the regular-season sweep.

The varsity squad was heavily favored on their home court. Coming off a win over Robbinsville earlier in the week, the Lady Jackets looked to keep their winning streak going. Hayesville got off to a strong start, winning set one 25-16.

In set two, the Lady Jackets were on cruise control, outpacing Hiwassee Dam 25-8. The domination continued in the third, with Hayesville wrapping things up with a 25-17 win.

Hiwassee Dam got the jump in the middle school match-up, winning the opening set 25-17. In set two, the Lady Jackets appeared to be on their way to an easy set win to tie things up. However, Hiwassee Dam not only pulled even but also took the lead late in the set. Hayesville was down 23-22 when coach Amy Trout called a timeout to rally her team. A long volley followed, and the visitors found themselves just one point shy of a match win.

That point came when one of the officials awarded Hiwassee Dam a controversial point on a delay of game penalty against the Lady Jackets. The call gave the Lady Eagles the set, 25-23, and the match, 2-0.

Hayesville's JV and varsity teams will hit the road on Monday, Sept. 9, to take on the Lady Mustangs of Smoky Mountain.
