On Thursday, November 14, 2024, at approximately 11:40 p.m., Clay County Sergeant Steven Smith stopped a Toyota Highlander on US Highway 64 West near Hills Country Store in Hayesville. The vehicle had been flagged for displaying a license plate revoked due to an insurance violation.

The driver was identified as Joy McKenzie Shipers, 20, of Murphy, while a passenger, Christian Cade Davies, 20, of Hayesville, was also present in the vehicle. Clay County Lieutenant Tyler Faggard and Officer Drew Judge arrived on the scene to assist with the stop.

During a search of the Toyota, officers discovered a toothbrush holder containing three hypodermic needles, two of which contained a clear liquid suspected to be

methamphetamine. Officer Judge also found a small black flashlight near the gear shifter, which concealed a plastic bag containing a white crystalline substance. Shipers admitted the substance was methamphetamine and claimed ownership of it.

Shipers was arrested and charged with:

Felony Possession of Methamphetamine

Displaying a Revoked License Plate.

She was transported to the Clay County Detention Center, where she is being held without bond due to previously pending methamphetamine charges in Cherokee County.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
