The Overlook Theatre Company is set to present The Civil War: The Musical Story Of Us, a powerful and moving production that explores one of the most defining chapters in American history. This dramatic theatrical concert will grace the stage with public showings on April 24th, 25th, and 26th at 7:00 p.m., alongside a special school showing on April 25th at 10 a.m., recommended for students in 6th grade and above.

Based on historical accounts, The Civil War weaves together letters, diaries, firsthand narratives, and the poignant words of iconic figures like Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, and Walt Whitman. The result is a gut-wrenching retrospective that captures the emotional turmoil of a nation divided. Originally nominated for multiple Tony Awards, including Best Musical, the production features a stirring score blending Gospel, Country, Rock, and Folk, composed by Frank Wildhorn with lyrics by Wildhorn, Gregory Boyd, and Jack Murphy.
This epic revue puts a human face on the tragedy, delving into the lives of soldiers and leaders fighting for their ideals, the families they left behind, and the enslaved individuals whose freedom hung in the balance. Through its compelling storytelling and unforgettable music, the musical challenges audiences to reflect on timeless themes of freedom, honor, and faith.
Tickets for the public performances are priced at $15 for students and $18 for adults. The school showing, tailored for educational audiences, requires reservations due to its all-day format. Schools or groups interested in attending can contact the theatre box office at 828-524-1598 or email Lisa Hilliard at lisa@smokymountainarts.com for more information or to secure their spots.
Don’t miss this awe-inspiring production that promises to leave a lasting impression as it brings history to life through song and story. Presented by the Overlook Theatre Company, The Civil War: The Musical Story Of Us is a must-see event this April in Franklin.
