Last week, State Auditor Dave Boliek issued a memorandum to UNC System school chief financial officers and finance leaders, recommending they take extreme care in reporting financial statements with regard to changes in the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) research grant policy.

The North Carolina Office of the State Auditor (OSA) is required by law to conduct financial statement audits of UNC System schools, as well as a statewide Single Audit Report that examines federal awards received by entities in North Carolina. NIH grants received by universities are reflected in the financial statements reviewed by OSA.

"Our financial statement audits stick to the numbers, and that’s exactly what our universities need to be doing," said State Auditor Boliek. "The last thing we want to report are findings that could have been avoided."
