Hayesville High School hosted Andrews High School on Tuesday, Jan. 21, for an exciting night of Smoky Mountain Conference basketball. The atmosphere in The Hive was electric, as both fan bases made their presence known with passionate support for their teams.


In the first varsity matchup of the night, the Lady Yellow Jackets secured a hard-fought 45-34 victory over the Lady Wildcats. However, the final score doesn't reflect how closely contested the game was. Andrews came out strong, leading 12-7 after the first quarter. Hayesville responded in the second, taking a narrow 18-15 lead into halftime. The Lady Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 26-21 after three quarters and finished strong in the fourth to claim the win. Leading the scoring effort for Hayesville was Mallory Peck with 13 points, Emma Ashe with 9 points, followed closely by Ava Shook and Breanna Abrams, who each contributed 7 points.

Following the girls' game, the Yellow Jackets and Wildcats men's teams took the court for a thrilling battle that went down to the wire. From the opening tip, the pace was relentless, with both teams exchanging baskets in a back-and-forth contest. Despite Andrews being favored coming into the game, Hayesville rose to the challenge and pushed the Wildcats to overtime. The Yellow Jackets held a slim 19-16 lead after the first quarter and maintained their advantage at halftime, leading 34-31. The intense action continued through the third quarter, with Hayesville clinging to a 51-50 lead. At the end of regulation, the score was deadlocked at 64-64. In overtime, Andrews managed to pull ahead, ultimately securing a 78-72 victory.


Hayesville's offensive attack was led by Slade Crouch and Brady Reynolds, who each poured in 17 points. Jackson Sellers provided a strong presence in the paint with 14 points, while Brendon Lynch added 8 points to the effort.


Both Hayesville teams will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 24, as they hit the road to face conference rival Murphy.
