Morrow creates new nonprofit to combat ‘woke’ education agenda

Michele Morrow, the former Republican candidate for superintendent of public instruction in North Carolina, has launched a new national nonprofit with the goal of “transforming” education and opposing woke ideology in the classroom.

Morrow narrowly lost to Democrat Moe Green 51% to 49% in November in the state superintendent’s race. Morrow was the surprise winner of the GOP primary in May against incumbent Catherine Truitt, and she ran a campaign focused on traditional education values, such as school safety and opposition to critical race theory. Her campaign was also marked by her outspoken views on politics and education reform.

Now, Morrow told Carolina Journal that she’s using her new nonprofit, the National Alliance for Education Reform, to “keep the campaign promises that I made to the people of North Carolina, but also extending it through the entire country.”

Morrow added that the organization’s goal is to defeat the “radical agendas of organizations like the National Education Association, the American Library Association, and Planned Parenthood.” The focus will initially be on NC but that reach will soon extend nationally to other states, she said, and its efforts will include lobbying for greater transparency in public education, creating awareness of what’s going on in classrooms, and creating accountability for the decisions of school boards.

“Most people don’t really know what’s going on behind closed doors, what’s going on with curriculum, what’s going on with the agendas that they are forcing into the minds of the next generation,” Morrow said.

Morrow pointed to several examples in North Carolina, where she says some of the largest school districts have ignored laws such as the Parents Bill of Rights and laws to protect women’s sports. “We want to make people aware where the laws are not being obeyed in their districts and where their daughters are at risk,” she said.

Another area of focus is to eliminate DEI, CRT, and gender identity ideologies from public school curricula, Morrow said.

“We’re just trying to keep that conversation going so that we can ensure that the government school systems here in the United States are promoting a pro-God, pro-America, pro-meritocracy, academically excellent system that prepares our kids to be the leaders that we need them to be in the future,” she said. “It’s important that we recognize that this is how the left has been destroying America as a nation. It’s through the minds of our children, and it’s time for us to protect our children above all costs.”
