North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrests of a Lenoir County couple on a total of eight arson and fraud related charges. Monteze Rodriguez Nelson, 44, and Jalesia Madrid Nelson, 33, both of 1609 George Ave., Kinston, were each charged with second degree arson, felony conspiracy, insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense. All eight charges are felonies.
According to special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, the Nelson’s burned down the home located at 483 Back St., Kinston and then claimed to American Modern Property and Casualty that they did not know the cause of the fire. The couple ultimately received a check in the amount of $57,638.38 for the loss.
According to the arrest warrants, the fire occurred on Aug. 8, 2024.
The couple were arrested on Jan. 6 by the Kinston Police Department, fingerprinted and both were released on a $100,000 secured bond each. They appeared in Lenoir County District Court on Jan. 8.
“Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet,” Commissioner Causey said. “Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar go to covering the cost of fraud. I’m fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina.”
