Lady Yellow Jackets Fall to Rabun County in Battle of the States Tournament Opener

The Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets faced a tough challenge on Friday, Dec. 27, as they took on the Rabun County Lady Wildcats in the opening round of the Battle of the States tournament at Towns County High School. Despite a strong start, Hayesville was unable to keep pace with the high-powered offense of Rabun County, ultimately falling 53-34.


The game began on a positive note for Hayesville, with the Lady Yellow Jackets holding a narrow 10-8 lead after the first quarter. Emma Ashe, Mallory Peck, and Ava Shook set the tone early, combining for all of Hayesville’s first-quarter points.


Rabun County turned up the intensity in the second quarter, outscoring Hayesville 20-10 to take a 28-20 lead into halftime. Peck led Hayesville’s first-half scoring effort with 7 points, while Ashe contributed 6, and Shook added 5.


The third quarter proved to be the turning point, as Rabun County’s relentless defense and fast-paced offense extended their lead to 48-31 by the end of the period. Despite their best efforts, the Lady Yellow Jackets couldn’t mount a comeback in the final quarter.


Peck led Hayesville’s scoring effort with 12 points on the night. Bryleigh Krieger and Emma Ashe each chipped in 6 points, Shook finished with 5, Briley Clampitt added 3, and Breanna Abrams contributed 2.


The loss places Hayesville in the tournament’s losers bracket, where they will face Coosa High School on Saturday, Dec. 28, at 10 a.m. Despite the setback, the Lady Yellow Jackets will look to bounce back and showcase their resilience in their next matchup.
