The JV Yellow Jacket football team returned to their home field on Thursday, Sept. 12th to host Smoky Mountain Conference opponent Swain County. Under very heavy skies with a sprinkle of rain, the two teams slugged it out.
Quarter one went by quickly with the teams exchanging possessions without scoring. However, as the quarter came to a close, the Maroon Devils were threatening. A 1-yard touchdown run stopped the clock with 9:52 left in the half and gave Swain a 6-0 lead following a failed 2-point conversion.
With 32 seconds left before halftime, running back Rylan Graves scampered for 12 yards to tie things up 6-6. Quarterback Crow Collins nailed CJ Finn in the corner of the end zone for a 2-point conversion to put Hayesville up 8-6 going into halftime.
In the second half, Swain County returned to the end zone with a 34-yard trick play touchdown pass. The 2-point conversion was successful, giving the Maroon Devils a 14-8 lead with 2:58 left in the third quarter.
A Yellow Jacket fumble gave Swain the ball on the 25-yard line and the visitors capitalized with a touchdown run. The 2-point conversion was good, extending the Devils' lead to 22-8 at the 2:43 mark of the third.
In the fourth quarter, the Maroon Devils used a long quarterback-keeper to get inside the 10 yard line with under 3 minutes to play. Hayesville was unable to successfully defend their end zone and Swain scored. The 2-point conversion was no good, but the visitors led 28-8 with 2:33 left in the game.
That was the way the game ended, giving the Yellow Jackets a 1-2 record on the season. Hayesville will hosted Cherokee on Thursday, Sept. 19.
