The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), is actively investigating the discovery of human remains in a wooded area off Burrell Mountain.
The investigation began on January 23 when a hiker discovered a human skull and contacted authorities. A search of the area was conducted on January 27 by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the SBI. A second search on February 4, aided by anthropology students from Western Carolina University, led to the recovery of additional remains.
Following a forensic examination, the SBI identified the deceased as Kamron Peter Rondon, a 35-year-old African American male with dreadlocks. Authorities noted that Rondon had not been reported missing to any law enforcement agencies.
At this time, the cause of death remains undetermined. The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance in the investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office at (828) 837-2589 during business hours, (828) 835-3144 after hours and on weekends, or submit an anonymous tip at (828) 837-1344 or crime.tips@cherokeecounty-nc.gov.
Authorities expressed gratitude to the SBI and Western Carolina University for their support in the case. Further updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
