In a heartfelt ceremony held on Wednesday, December 11, Hayesville High School senior Ella Matheson signed her letter of intent to continue her volleyball career at Young Harris College. The event, which took place in the foyer of the HHS gym, was attended by Matheson’s family, friends, teammates, and coaches, all eager to celebrate this significant milestone.
What makes Matheson’s achievement particularly remarkable is her relatively late start in the sport. She began playing volleyball as a sophomore, yet through sheer determination and hard work, she has soared to new heights in just three years.
“Considering I started my sophomore year, I didn’t ever think this would be an opportunity for me,” Matheson said. “So I’m super excited.”
Hayesville head coach Tammy Dills recalled her first encounter with Matheson’s determination to join the team. “Her work ethic is very high, so when she came to me as a sophomore and asked, ‘Do you think I could play volleyball?,’ I welcomed her with open arms.”
Matheson has proven to be a quick learner and a valuable player on the court, contributing to Hayesville’s strong volleyball program. Her signing to Young Harris, just a 15-minute drive from HHS, ensures her continued presence in the local sports scene.
This marks the second signing in a month for Hayesville volleyball, a testament to the talent and dedication within the program. Colleges near and far are beginning to take notice of the athletes emerging from Hayesville’s athletic department.
Matheson’s journey from novice to collegiate athlete is an inspiration to aspiring players and a reminder of the power of perseverance. Young Harris College is gaining a player whose determination and passion are matched only by her potential.
Congratulations to Ella Matheson on this incredible achievement!
