A Hayesville man was released on bond last week after being charged with the abuse of an elderly family member, according to the Clay County Sheriff's Office.

Chief Deputy Joe Wood stated that there is medical evidence indicating that Delbert Walter, 65, failed to provide the necessary attention and care to an elderly and disabled man under his supervision. The victim, who is in his 90s, was found in such poor condition that hospitalization was required.

Arrest warrants reveal that Walter neglected to provide adequate medical and hygienic care, as well as proper treatment for the victim's wounds. Concerns were initially raised by another family member and a family attorney, who reported their observations to local authorities.

Walter was arrested on Wednesday and released the following day after posting a $10,000 bond.

The investigation into the case is ongoing.
