Governor Josh Stein expressed deep disappointment on Monday after the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) rejected North Carolina’s request to extend its 100 percent reimbursement period for Hurricane Helene disaster recovery efforts. The decision, announced while Stein was visiting storm-affected families in Newland, comes six months after the hurricane devastated western North Carolina.
Stein had sought an additional 180 days of full federal funding to support ongoing recovery efforts, including debris removal, home rebuilding, and road restoration. FEMA’s denial prompted the governor to call on the President to reconsider, suggesting even a 90-day extension would provide critical relief.
“I am extremely disappointed,” Stein said in a statement. “The need in western North Carolina remains immense — people need debris removed, homes rebuilt, and roads restored. The people of western North Carolina are working hard to get back on their feet; they need FEMA to help them get the job done.”
The decision adds pressure to local communities still grappling with the aftermath of Helene, as they face rising costs without full federal support. Stein’s administration continues to advocate for resources to aid the region’s recovery.
