Clay County Schools has been informed of a cybersecurity incident involving the PowerSchool Student Information System, which occurred on December 28, 2024. The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) has reported that the breach affected school systems nationwide, including many within North Carolina.

Since learning of the incident, Clay County Schools has been actively working to gather more details and remains in close communication with NCDPI to provide updates as new information becomes available. According to state officials, the breach has been contained, though database information related to Clay County Schools employees and students may have been affected. NCDPI and PowerSchool continue to investigate the extent of the impact on North Carolina educators and students.

The incident originated from compromised credentials of a PowerSchool contractor, leading to unauthorized access. PowerSchool has assured stakeholders that the breach has been addressed, and any compromised data was not shared and has since been destroyed.

Clay County Schools does not own or manage the security of the NCDPI PowerSchool system. While local school districts had no control over or means to prevent this incident, Clay County Schools is committed to ensuring the privacy and security of all data.

NCDPI has advised that notifications will be sent in the coming days to those who may have been impacted. Clay County Schools will continue working to identify any accessed database information and will share further guidance on any necessary actions that affected individuals should take.

For continued updates, please stay connected with Clay County Schools and official NCDPI communications.
