A joint investigation by the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office and Clay County Sheriff's Office has led to the arrest of alleged drug traffickers Kenneth Charles Smith and India Shelton. The investigation began with Smith, suspected of trafficking methamphetamine.
On July 31, 2024, a vehicle stop in Cherokee County revealed a trafficking amount of methamphetamine. Subsequent searches of Smith's residence in Hayesville, NC, uncovered more methamphetamine and multiple firearms. In total, approximately 168 grams of methamphetamine were seized.
On August 6, 2024, an additional 2 ounces of methamphetamine linked to Smith were found in Murphy, NC. Smith faces multiple charges and is held on a $300,000 bond, while Shelton is held on a $150,000 bond, both at Cherokee County Detention Center.
Sheriff Dustin Smith thanked his Narcotics Unit and all assisting agencies.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
