The Clay County Sheriff’s Office has issued a public alert regarding a phone scam targeting local residents. According to the announcement, an individual posing as a deputy from the sheriff’s office has been contacting individuals, falsely claiming they failed to comply with a subpoena. The scammer then attempts to solicit a $100 payment from the victim.
The report stated that in at least one instance, the potential victim became suspicious and ended the call before providing any payment information. Fortunately, no financial loss occurred.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that they will never call residents to request payment for official processes, such as serving subpoenas or other legal documents. This practice is not in line with their procedures, and any such call should be treated as fraudulent.
Local authorities urge residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious phone calls to their office. If you receive a similar call, do not provide any personal or financial information. Instead, hang up immediately and contact the Clay County Sheriff’s Office to verify the claim.
